My Little Guy Has A Broken Arm!

So yesterday evening at about 7:30, my little Hunter broke his arm! This is insane. He and Tanner were chasing each other around the house while I was cleaning up stuff from dinner. Kyle was in the living room. Tanner was on the tear so Hunter jumped up on the arm of the couch and jumped down onto the cushions (which he's not supposed to do, but we all know how much I'm listened to as a general rule). Anyway, as he was landing, he came down on his wrist on the top of the couch. It was bent and he landed on the top of his hand. I can't explain it very well. I'd probably have to show you. Anyway, he was instantly crying about how his whole arm hurt. It had us nervous, but we didn't think it could possibly be broken because he didn't seem to hit it that hard. Anyway, he favored his other arm for awhile, but then started using it, so we just figured he'd tweaked it or something and put him to bed at 8:30. He woke up at 10:30 crying and grabbing his wrist.....he was a little disoriented. We had just switched him to the top bunk, so I told him to come over to me and I'd lift him down. Well, he wouldn't even put pressure on his arm, so I thought, "Oh, crud." Anyway, I got dressed again and nursed Haylee and we were off. We went to Othello (even though I'm not a fan of that hospital) because it's a lot closer. Haylee slept through it all (I had to bring her in case I was there forever and she needed to eat) which was good. Hunter was terrified. I've probably said it before, but his pediatrician thinks he has mild anxiety. He's really smart so he remembers a lot and puts things together that you wouldn't think he would. Turns out he was scared he was going to be left there overnight (cause I just had a baby and I stayed at the hospital for several days). I assured him he wouldn't be left anywhere without Mommy. That seemed to make it better, but when we actually got to leave, I think he was relieved. Anyway, he was SO BRAVE. So, he has a Torus fracture of his left radius (the bone by his thumb). I'd never heard of this, but it's the kind of fracture where their bone just crumbles like an accordion, instead of cracking or whatever. It's a little one, which is a relief. I saw it on the x-ray and it's only on one side of the bone, not the whole thing, which is good. Anyway, he's splinted now....for about 5 days and in a sling, but he'll get a cast on it for four weeks at that point. They're waiting for any swelling to come and go before they cast it. It's looking swollen this morning, so I'll have to keep an eye on it. Anyway.....broken bones equal trauma for a mother, but I'll live. What I may not live through is Hunter's fit if he gets an itch under that cast. My, oh my!!

So, Lilly broke her arm on her 3rd birthday. Freak accident too. She didn't even land very hard on her arm but she screamed like it had been cut off. Sure enough, a broken elbow. The cool thing, kids only have to wear casts for like 3 weeks or it interferes with their growth. Lilly loved the attention she got from her pink cast and we decorated it with Cindrella stickers. It was a totally crazy experience for me...AHHHH!

Holy smokes!!! Poor kid.

Okay, two comments: #1 - I love the second picture! That's totally vintage Hunter. #2 - Did you buy him ice cream? I think that's the rule for broken bones.

Oh my gosh! How is he doing? I think Matt is right, ice cream is in order, though you don't want him to think it's a reward for breaking his bones! ha ha

How's Mommy doing?

Poor kid! That's crazy how it happened. I guess kids aren't made of rubber like it seems like sometimes. Hopefully his recovery will go by quickly for you. Too bad it's a cast in the summer though - he'll have to stay out of the pool!

I guess it's at least now and not when it will be the butt hot summer that is Eastern WA and he'll want in the water! How scary for YOU and HUNTER! Oh the joys of little boys.

Man I'm SORRY!! You're life is one non-stop adventure, isn't it?
Not to make you worry, but this won't be the last time. With boys, you're bound to be in the ER a lot the next several years. Just ask my parents in law with their 4 young boys... the ER was second home for a 5 year span!
