Okay, I have something to say.....

I realize that my blog is generally filled with humor and laced with sarcasm and that it's very seldom that I say anything serious, but I'm losing sleep over this one, so I thought I'd share my thoughts.

Like some, maybe not many, I've been concerned with the outcome of this election. Setting aside the poor economic condition of this country, the state of war, and the multitudes of other issues facing our citizens, I believe our country is battling severe moral decline. It's this issue that has me most alarmed. It's that same issue that urged me to vote for McCain. It's also that same issue that had me hoping and praying for a miracle.

Regardless of the outcome of everything else, I thought that the passing of California's Proposition 8 and other similar measures was my miracle. And maybe for now it is, but I realized today that the fight has only begun.

The internet is a wonderful tool that allows us access to the world and enables us to keep in touch with friends from all over. I'm a facebook user and through my news feed I saw that an old high school friend had joined a group devoted to repealing proposition 8. I checked it out to see what their argument for that would be. I didn't find their argument, but something else entirely.

All of the group's comments and discussions were basically dedicated to destroying the Mormons. It seems that regardless of the hundreds of other churches and organizations involved in the support of proposition 8, we, as a church, are to shoulder the "blame." There are petitions circulating to revoke the church's tax-exempt status due to its "heavy involvement" in politics. There are cries for declaring our religion unconstitutional and banning our members from marrying in this country. The list goes on and on.

I was shocked and a little bit perturbed, to say the least (and anyone who's witnessed my temper can imagine that, I suppose). I thought about it all day and my irritation has morphed into something very different.

We, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have been charged to defend marriage and the family as was ordained by God. God's laws don't change at society's every whim, as much as that would be convenient for all. We are to be immovable. Those opposing proposition 8 view our firm stance as intolerance and an attack on human rights. They believe that we "hate homosexuals" and are trying to force our beliefs on the country. The contrary is true. You can love an individual and not a behavior. They believe that our rights to worship and practice what we know to be true are beneath every other group's right to do so.

A photographer was sued in New Mexico for refusing to photograph a same-sex couple. The couple had the right to demand "equality," but the photographer didn't have the right to live his beliefs. A doctor was sued for refusing to artificially inseminate a lesbian couple. The couple had the right to demand "equality," but the doctor didn't have the right to live his beliefs. The rights of same-sex couples are believed to trump the rights afforded to religious worship. And in the courts, religion is losing.

So my irritation slowly changed to sadness, but I still feel the fire of conviction. It's been almost 200 years since Joseph Smith knelt in the Sacred Grove. Almost 200 years since he conversed with God the Father and Jesus Christ. Almost 200 years since the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, along with its Priesthood authority and saving ordinances, was restored to the Earth. And again, almost 200 years since the Saints trekked west to the Salt Lake Valley, threatened with extermination orders, angry mobs, and zero protection from the government of the United States of America. And those Saints, upon arrival, still praised God and country and were grateful to be living in the land of the free.

God has declared this the promised land. He's promised His blessings as we live His commandments. He never promised an exemption from trials or persecution. So although I imagine that the attacks on the church will only get worse with time and am sure that this battle over proposition 8 is only the beginning of an even larger moral war, I am grateful to live in this country. And I'm even more grateful to belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This won't be the first time that the members of this church face persecution, nor will it be the last I'm sure, but I'm proud to be standing on this side of the line.

I'm right there with you! It definately is a scary time in which we live. It truly is a modern day sodom and gamorrah!

Go BriAnne! Couldn't have said it better myself. And seriously, all those petitioners can sign papers till they're blue in the face because obviously there are more people in California who agree with us than don't. Just because you believe something really hard doesn't make it true.

Thank goodness for prophets and the scriptures!

Funny how liberals "go along with the will of the voters" when it suits them but not the other way around. If conservatives have to "deal" with an Obama presidency, liberals need to "deal" with their defeat in California. Attacking the church will just give us more publicity. Even more interesting is that Obama WON California, meaning it's not just conservative Republicans who support the traditional definition of marriage.

VERY well said. I was so glad to hear that Proposition 8 was won in our favour (CDN spelling!) and that we have a hope of maintaining the traditional family. It's going to be a tough fight, but I think we can do it!

If you thought all that was bad, you should see this commercial that was airing on TV in California: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q28UwAyzUkE

The Church Newsroom has several articles in regards to the hot topic, but here is one that was most recently put out: http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/news-releases-stories/church-responds-to-same-sex-marriage-votes

We're going to have to fight with all we have to stand up for our beliefs because I think you're right, it's only the beginning!

Wowsers. Way to go kiddo. One opinion I read online is that people are going after the LDS Church because they're so visible that they make an easy target.

True fact #1: The Church doesn't give a single dollar to any political movement. As a matter of fact, it's rare for any of the Church leaders to even comment on politics.

True fact #2: There are about 700,000 members of the church in California. Over 5 MILLION people voted "yes" to Prop 8. Yet, the Church is being "blamed."

I think Obama's win in California (as well as the country) was less about conservatism versus liberalism and more of a statement of how everyone has felt about the Bush administration.

I can't believe how alike we are in this family. I just barely called Mom to let her know that I'd e-mailed her about this same topic and she told me about your post this morning and that Dan had called her with a lot of the same concerns. Shoot, I love this family.

This whole thing is a mess. I feel like it's going to get A LOT worse before it gets better. It helps to know that we've got the Gospel to keep us pointed in the right direction.

(I'll forward my e-mail to you.)

Go Girl! That was beautifully stated!

Did you get the letter from Pres. Highem (did you and Kyle serve with him?) Anyway he linked to a list of supporters for the Prop. and guess what...the Church of LDS was not listed but there were tons of others.

A few years ago I tried to warn my children that "equality" would be dangerous for the Church. They thought I was nuts....but their eyes have been opened!

From today's news this is going to be a fight...even though the majority have spoken.

Well said,
Wendy and I have been talking about this for over an hour today. We are grateful that in this world of declining morals we had a moment of victory. We have been ridiculed and protested as a church for doing what we did. The members should be proud that they have been singled out for supporting Proposition 8 and correct moral principles.

I couldn't agree more with Everything you said and am glad to know that I am not alone in that! You're such an awesome chick. I love your stinkin' guts BriAnne!

BriAnne, I've been having the same feelings and anxieties. What will the world be like for our children? It's a little scary. In fact, it's a LOT scary!

Well said, I agree 100%! Thankfully there are plenty people out that are not LDS that have the same thoughts on this but why not blame the mormons, right?

I have been feeling much the same way and feel the victory in Calif., Florida and Arizona was truly a miracle given this country's moral decline. I think the time has come for us to put our money where our mouth is and let our voices be heard. No longer can we be complacent. Thanks for this moving testimony. Carol Magill

Bri, you are awesome. This says so much about what most Latter Day Saints fell. You hit the nail on the head. It is going to get worse and the comments from your friends show how right you are. I've felt this country was a real Sodom and Gamora for a long time now. It's time that all Christians stand up for what is right because their are more of us in the world.Like Matt I am so chankful for our family and itls togetherness in our thinking. Praise the Lord for out Gospal and the Scriptures.
