The Beginning of Sports Madness

Hunter loves sports. He always has. He’s been begging to play team sports since he was three. Well, unless you drive your kids all the way into the Tri-Cities, options out here are limited until they’re in school. T-ball is the exception to that rule. As long as you’re five years old, you can play. He’s been essentially counting down the days for the last year or so…..and it finally started last week. He LOVES it! He’s been able to hit a baseball with Kyle pitching to him for at least a year, so it’s taking some practice to get him used to hitting off of a tee, but he’s managing just fine. Watching my little guy play is about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life…..especially since he’s fully outfitted. You technically don’t have to have baseball pants or cleats to play t-ball, but Daddy is just as into this whole thing as Hunter and so let me assure you that Hunter looked the part.:) I can’t wait to watch him progress. He loves playing and it’s so fun to watch.

He wouldn’t smile so I asked him if he was going to marry his friend, Kali. I can’t prove it or anything, but I’m fairly certain that pretending he can’t hear me by plugging his ears is kid talk for “yes.”:)

The only catch to allowing your 5 year old to play t-ball when he’s not in school is that it generally means you have to coach. So, guess what I’m doing?:) Hunter’s best friend, Shayden, is on the team too, and his Mom (who happens to be one of my good friends) is coaching with me, so it’s actually quite fun.  We had our first game yesterday and it was absolutely hilarious. I can’t get enough of the forgetting to run, laying down on the bases, throwing the ball the completely wrong direction, or picking grass when you’re supposed to be fielding. I found myself laughing through the entire game. We even have 2 kids who like to think they’re dinosaurs and act accordingly (Shayden included). Good stuff.:) I can honestly say that I have no regrets about coaching.

Oh, and P.S., anyone who knew my little brother, Dan, as a kid, can attest to the fact that Hunter looks like him in that last picture. The too big baseball cap pushing down the ears is 100% Uncle Dan. I informed Hunter of that fact and he said, “Well, that’s alright. Uncle Dan’s cool.” And that’s a fact. He is cool. They both are.:)

Wow, you're a trooper to coach. I coached 5th & 6th grade boys basketball. I really enjoyed it but it was extremely frustrating for me, I then learned I lack patience. Although 5 year olds would probably be more comical than frustrating:). I love the pics of Hunter he definitely looks the part.

Fantastic! This reminds me of when I subbed in gym class at an elementary school and we played kickball and I had to tell kids when to run and WHERE to run. Love it

Way to go Hunter. Pretty soon you'll be a big Mariner fan like your Uncle Dan and Great Grandma. You look swell in your uniform even though it's a Red Sox. Have a great time playing t-ball. Glad your coaching so that he can play Bri.
